Things to do at Times Square

I am going to have fun in New York city and would like to spend 2 to 3 hours at Times Square. Do you think its enough time to be there and enjoy all exciting activities available there for travelers. I heard about skating there. Is it available for limited time frame or over the year? Share with me frankly what you know in this regard.
